What does a birth doula do?

  • Stays with the laboring parent through the birth process.
  • Provides physical comfort measures, emotional support and informational support for informed decision making.
  • Assist birthing parent in creating and carrying out birth plans and preferences.
  • Aids in facilitating communication between the laboring parent, support partner and clinical care provider.
  • Encourages the partner to participate and meets them at their comfort level.

Postpartum Doula

What does a postpartum doula do?

  • Understands the emotional, hormonal and physical changes of the postpartum time can be momentous.
  • Cares for the client and their family in their home in the early postpartum period.
  • Assist with meal preparation.
  • Light household organization and tidying.
  • Evidence based support for newborn feeding.
  • Newborn care and sibling care.
  • Provides non-medical emotional and physical support.
  • Provides additional resources and referrals when/if necessary.
  • Encourages rest for the healing family.
